Nun Kum Dance Group
The Sliammon Nun Kum Dancers were formed in 1994 by Jolene Louie and Erik Blaney with the help of Dorothy Louie, Gail Blaney and Maureen Adams. Originally part of the Sliammon Cultural Program, the dance group also had ties to the Sliammon Fancy Shawl Dancers. The group initially started out small with only a few members at first, but has now grown to around 20 members to date, with ages ranging from 5 years and up.
The Nun-Kum dancers are from the Coast Salish Nation of Sliammon. The Dance Group has enjoyed learning, practicing and sharing all of their songs and dances with the community of Powell River. The dance group meets weekly during the fall to spring, on Mondays from 4:45pm - 5:45pm at the Sliammon Child Development Centre. They take the summer season off to enjoy the nice weather. Each week the Dancers practice their songs and dances, and discuss stories and legends they would like to perform in the future.
The Nun Kum Dancers have performed at many events through out the years, including:
- Powell River Sea Fair Festival
- BlackBerry Wine and Cheese Reception
- Blackberry Festival
- Lund Hotel Grand Opening
- Earth Day Celebrations
- Sliammon AIP Treaty Signing
The Dance group is extremely proud to represent their community and share some of the Sliammon culture with the world. If you would like to get in contact with the Sliammon Nun-Kum Dancers please contact the Sliammon Cultural Coordinator, David Louie, at the Sliammon Band Office (See Band Office).
