Sliammon Salmon Hatchery

The Sliammon Salmon Hatchery located on the Sliammon River is north of Powell River and has been operated by the Sliammon First Nation under a contract with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

The mandate of the Sliammon Salmon Hatchery is to enhance the existing stocks of Chum, Coho, Pink, and Chinook salmon in the Sliammon River. The project employs three members who brood targeted a capacity of two million Chum eggs and 250,000 Chinook eggs and a additional 150,000 Coho as well as up to 1 million pinks. As a result of their efforts the Sliammon Hatchery has produced and released over 30 million salmon between 1977 and 2006.

In the fall, hatchery workers monitor the four species as they return to spawn. Eggs are taken from adult salmon, fertilized and cared for through the winter months, when the eggs hatch in the spring; the fry are fed and cared for until they are ready for release.

In addition to egg collection and the care and feeding of young fry, the hatchery crew is involved in a number of other hatchery-related activities. Through public tours, the hatchery promotes awareness with regards to the Salmon Enhancement Program and conservation of one of our most valuable resources, the salmon species as a whole. As a key component in the " Cross Cultural Awareness". The hatchery educates the school children of Powell River about how vital the salmon are to the Native people of Sliammon and with the " Salmon In The Classroom", the importance of enhancement and conservation.

The hatchery oversees and documents the Fall Native Food Fishery, as the food fish benefits are crucial to the Native people of Sliammon, but not only for food purposes, but for Cultural and Ceremonial purposes as well. The Coast Salish culture is shared throughout the Powell River area and is a key component in several annual events held in Powell River.
