Sliammon Salmon Hatchery Additional
The Sliammon Salmon Enhancement Society has been proactive with a protocol agreement signed off by Chief & Council to support our enhancement and habitat improvements within Sliammon traditional territory watersheds.
Due to shortfalls within the Department Of Fisheries and Oceans contract, we needed a alternative funding source to generate own source revenue to cover costs associated with various project ideas such as:
- Off Channel Wintering Habitat - Funding Provided By - Fisheries Renewal
- Fish Population Assessment – Sliammon Watershed – Fisheries Renewal
- Landscaping Hatchery Beautification Project – Community Improvement Fee, HRDC
- Chinook Project 450k - HRDC
- Chum Enhancement - Fisheries Renewal
- Water Monitoring Station – Own Source Revenue ( ESSR)
- Sliammon Lake Dam - HRDC ( Store Water)
- Total Office Renovation – Own Source Revenue ( ESSR)
- Storage Shelter – Own Source Revenue
- Company Truck – Own Source Revenue – (ESSR)
- Community Smokehouse - HRDC
This list was for the first year on operations under the society, we have since then started the protocol agreement with all user groups within Sliammon Traditional Territories with companies such as:
- Powell River Model Community – Provided work for 3 band members ( Fish Count)
- Steel Head Society – Infrared study on wetted lands. Work for 3 people
- Triton Consultants – work for 3 people ( River Survey)
- BCIT – Mapping Our rivers
- PREI – Culvert Modification ( Theodosia Diversion - work for 3 band members)
These are some of the things that have taken place in a short period of time in Sliammon Traditional Territory that could not have happened if we didn't have a society.
ESSR- ( Escapement Salmon Spawning Requirements) This permit is available if you have a surplus of salmon. We have been working on this for some time now trying to increase populations of chum salmon, which we have done.
Egg targets are met according to our contract obligations. We collect 1 million eggs for DFO and an additional 1 million for Sliammon First Nation, which in turn over seeds our river capacity, we then apply for this permit and find a market, since we are so close to the ocean we receive commercial market value for our product.
