About Sliammon...The community of Sliammon is located approximately 12 kilometres north of Powell River on the west of the mainland of British Columbia. The current population is approximately 1000 people. The area is commonly referred to as the Sunshine Coast. Sliammon is situated 133 km north of Vancouver, and across the Georgia Strait from Vancouver Island. Sliammon is situated on one of six parcels of reserve land the Federal Government assigned to the Tla'Amin First Nation in 1879. Sliammon is the only parcel that is accessible by land and that has permanent homes. The other five parcels of land are accessible only by water. They include P''P'K'lyajim (Cortes Island), TUKwanen (Malaspina Inlet, Lancelot Inlet), Tuxwnech (Okeover Inlet), K'K'lkl (Grace Harbour) and A Gyak Sen (Harwood Island). Sliammon First Nation has recently signed an Agreement in Principle with the Federal and Provincial Governments, setting the stage for a new era of partnerships. |
